History Curriculum
Upper Elementary - Junior High
As with all subjects, history is not taught in isolation. History of our faith is an integral part of world history. Our literature-based history program integrates rich, beautiful texts from the time period being studied and naturally connects with geography and religion, centering on the belief that Jesus Christ is the central point of all history, weaving salvation history into world events to help students understand God’s plan throughout time.
Learning often extends beyond reading and discussion, as students explore history through creative expressions such as writing and acting out plays, poetry, and hands-on activities, guided by their interests as they relate to the time period or historical characters they are studying.
It is a story-driven approach, making history more engaging and memorable by presenting events as compelling narratives rather than isolated facts, which ensures retention and interest.
Our history curriculum is organized around four major time periods, which are taught cyclically. Beginning in Upper Elementary and continuing through Junior High, students study a different historical period each year.
Upper Elementary: 4th – 6th grade
Ancient History and Old Testament : Follows the Biblical history of the Israelites as the chosen people, sent to prepare the world for the coming of the Messiah. While studying the surrounding cultures of the Mediterranean world: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome - the seedbed of Western Civilization.
New Testament and Early Church history: within the context of the Roman Empire, this study emphasizes the life and death of Christ as the turning point of history
High Medieval through Post Reformation: The middle ages produced some of the most inspiring saints, beautiful cathedrals, paintings, sculptures, and literature, as well as scientific discoveries and inventions that endure to this day. This study also provides numerous opportunities to learn the truth about the role played by the Church in these fruitful centuries.
Junior High: 7th-8th grade
American History: This study begins with the story of the arrival of the Spanish and French Catholic explorers and missionaries in both North and South America, including their interactions with Native Americans. The program continues through the era of immigration and industrialization in the early 20th century.
New Testament and Early Church history: This period of history is revisited so students can deepen their understanding of the historical and spiritual significance of Jesus Christ’s entrance into human history. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is incorporated to help students grow in understanding and appreciation of when, why, and where the teachings of our faith were formed.
